Charles Bukowski has many fans, some from the gutters and some whose names appear in glittering lights. As we have reported in the past, some famous Bukowski fans include Robert Pattinson, Drew Barrymore, Steven Wright, and Amber Tamblyn.
He also has his haters, of course, like Nick Cave.

In the fan category, we can now add Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator, writer, and star of the comedy-drama show Fleabag.
The New York Times recently interviewed Waller-Bridge about her reading habits, in which the publication asked, “What book might people be surprised to find on your shelves?”
“I’m a big fan of Charles Bukowski. He was an old dog, but I love how visceral his writing is,“ she said.
Waller-Bridge also revealed she is a fan of the following books:
- So the Wind Won’t Blow It All Away, by Richard Brautigan
- I Saw Esau: The Schoolchild’s Pocket Book, edited by Iona Opie and Peter Opie with illustrations by Maurice Sendak
- The Blue Lenses, by Daphne du Maurier
- East of Eden, by John Steinbeck
- The Master and Margarita, by Mikhail Bulgakov
- Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley
- The Ginger Man, by J. P. Donleavy
- The First Bad Man, by Miranda July
- Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov
- Thawing Frozen Frogs, by Brian Patten
- His Dark Materials trilogy, by Philip Pullman
- Forever, by Judy Blume
- Little Birds, by Anaïs Nin
Among the many interesting insights into herself she revealed in the interview was this brilliant line:
“Looking back, I started out feeling reading was an escape, then a chore, then a habit, then a luxury. Only now I’ve realized what a necessity it is, and how easily it’s taken for granted.”
